License Plate Bolts! Help!

I have a really simple problem, without any luck! My license plate was stolen/fell off (not really sure) and I have bought three kits of universal bolts to screw my license plate back into my stock none of which fit. I have a Scion xb '04. Does someone know the demensions of the screws/bolts that fit this... please help

we had a problem with people stealing plates, putting them on there cars, then stealing gas.....lol.......try to find some torx screws....not many people carry torx and they tend to fasten tighter than standard screw....not sure on the size...good luck!

Well as they sit here in front of me...3/16" machine screws, 3/4" long. The front, if yours were installed the same as mine, they used sheet metal screws...same size. I just changed mine out for some nicer ones and two remaining ones as plugs for the front to hide those unsitely holes that damaged my bumper.

Hope that helps.

Re: License Plate Bolts! Help!

I went to Ace Hardware and the 3/16 are too skinny... tried the 1/4-20 and 1/4-28 didn't work either. I think they are 1/4, but maybe 1/4-24... does anyone have any idea? This is killing me!

Re: License Plate Bolts! Help!

Although your problem is fixed I feel I should fix the info in this thread.

Rear license plate bolts on all Toyotas and Scions for the last 6 or 7 years at least are M6X1.0. They are NOT standard size, but METRIC.

Since the front bolts just go into the plastic you can use just about anything, but a very coarse thread lag screw with a hex head works best.

Happy bolting.
