Ok, as the resident roof rack expert (self-proclaimed, but I have awsome references) I have decided to put together this little database of what you will need to put the ever so popular roof rack on your styling ride.
Lets start with Yakima (my personal favorite):
Things that are needed to make the rack basic system:
1.
Q-towers
- one set of 4 (this is the easy one, they only make 1 type)
2.
Q-clips
- Q121 clips (2 sets, they are sold in pairs)
3.
Crossbars
- 58 inch crossbars (Yakima makes 4 lengths, get the right one)
and that is it. These 3 items will get you started.
Now we get to have the fun adding accessories. Suggested but not required:
1.
Fairing
- 50 inch (once again, there are 4 different length options)
2.
Lock cores
- 4 pack (4 pack is the minimum I suggest, these keep other jealous non-racking having folks from stealing your rack of you roof).
Next you need to decide what you will be carrying. I am not going to list all of the different accessories individually, because Yakima has alot of them, but I will list the basics, and the most popular mounts.
1.
Bike - Yakima has 9 of them currently. The most popular ones are the Steelhead, the Viper, and the Raptor.
2.
Ski and Snowboard - Currently there are 5 options here. I use THE FatCat series, but have used the PowderHound in the past, both are nice.
3.
Kayak and Canoe - 6 choices I think. I am using BowDown system right now.
4.
Surfboard and Windsurfer - use crossbar pads.
5.
Luggage and Cargo boxes (including baskets) - Once again, you have many options here. Most of the boxes are freaking huge, and look rather funny on the 1st Gen xB. I use the SkyBox 12, aero enhanced for quiet travel. For running around town, I have a Load Warrior backet that I use.
And that kids, completes our lesson on Yakima Roofrack products. When I get alittle more time, I will compile a full list from all the above categories for your viewing pleasure.
One final note. I have been selling and installing Yakima systems for over 10 years, and am a Certified Yakima Rack pro. Please do not hesitate to PM me with questions.
