| The Intake Thread Since ive been on clubxb, the most common isubject that comes up with performance mods is intakes. There are many styles and brands to choose from, so i figured id start a thread just about intakes, and share my experiences with intakes.
1. SRI= short ram intake. These are usually less expensive, and have a shorter intake pipe (most models have the filter end up behind the foglight). Although they supposedly dont get the coldest air possible, they are usually the best choice for an xB since it is harder to hydrolock a SRI. This is what i run on my 05 xb, and have had no problems for 30000 miles.
2. CAI= cold air intake. These are a bit more pricey, and have a longer intake tube that usually has the filter in front of the driver side front wheel close to the road. This is where the coldest air is, and nets about the most horsepower. They, however, are very prone to hydrolocking, and usually provide very little gain over a SRI.
Of the many brands, one should look for a model that places the crankcase vent tube after the mass air flow sensor. This prevents any oil vapors from accumulating on the sensor, eventually fouling it out. Ebay intakes are notorious for this, but I added a small inline filter to prevent the vapors from going into my sensor.
Another note is that most filters that go onto an aftermarket intake need to be oiled with special filter oil. Be sure to follow manufacturers specs when doing this, as over oiling the filter can result in sensor failure, and not enough oil will allow excess dirt to pass through the filter.
If anyone would like to respond, stating what kind of intake they have, how many miles they've run them, any performance increase, and any problems they've had are more than welcome. I hope anyone interneted in using an aftermarket intake will read this before doing so.
Hope this is a help. |

| Re: The Intake Thread If your filter is the cotton gauze type like most aftermarket filters, you should use a product such as K&N filter oil or any filter oil as long as it isnt for foam filters. That is a different type of oil. To oil it, you should first wash it with war water well, then let it dry THOROUGHLY which will take at least a few hours. Then, spray it on so that it creates a light coating over the entire ilter Dont soak it in oil though, as it will damage the MAF sensor. Let the oil absorb in, and wipe any excess off. Dont oil the inside of the filter. Then, reinstall. KEEP THE QUESTIONS COMING. THATS THE WHOLE IDEA OF THIS THREAD. |

| Re: The Intake Thread I have an F5 Fujita short ram intake, its got about 12000 miles on it, and never had a problem. theres not a whole lot of HP gain granted the motor is very small and does not push a whole lotta power anyways. maybe 1-2hp nothing noticeable at the petal. there is however a fuel mileage decrease due to the cool sound it makes i find my self burrying my foot in the petal more often. but i guess thats my own fault not the intake's.
in the opening post hydrolocking was mentioned on cold air intake systems.
there are CAI systems that offer a hydrolockout type of integrated system, with a little tube with a much smaller filter coming off the pipe at a bend point to divert water away from the motor and out of the intake system. when shopping for a quality intake system you might look for this feature for safety if CAI is the way you would like to go.
the SRI on the box... the filter is positioned in the fender well above the inner fender well, because of the position of the motor, theres not much hot air to pick up. being backwards so to speak from a honda motor our intake manifold (cold side of the motor) is in the front where the intake filter is closest to. along with the air coming in through the front lower grilles, there is really no quams about the intake pulling 'hot air'. researched and tested the F5 Fujita Short Ram Intake system is one of the most efficient intake systems for the xB. |

| Re: The Intake Thread I just had a Fujita SRI put on last night. From the get go, i noticed a more free flowing acceleration off the line. I got back in my newer box with no SRI this evening & hit the gas the same & was immediately disappointed i the lack of performance.. Now i am going to have to get one onto the other box..
Has anyone that has not done their intake ever opened up their aur box & looked at the filter inside?? When we were taking it apart, pulled the filter out & thought someone had stuck an egg crate in there instead. It's just a thick cardboard Piece of Poo. I don't see how ANY air could make it through to feed the motor..
I agree with w00st3r about the mileage though.. My foot seems heavier now cause I really dig the sound of the acceleration now..That and it makes a really cool noise on shutdown too. |

| Re: The Intake Thread in regards to the CAI, most of these CAI intakes can be converted to SRI. since the CAI comes in 2 pieces that can be seperated.
also in regards to hydrolock, INJEN has a fabric mesh cover that slips over your filter called hydroshield. it repels water to .005microns or somewhere around that measure. i had the hydrosheild on for over two years with heavy rain and with "mo air" portal, so i know that it works well.
Features:
Sitting on top of your performance air filter, the Hydro Shield blocks water and microscopic particles from getting into your engine
Drive confidently through light showers, deluges or even sand storms
While repelling water, the Hydro Shield still allows wide-open airflow, letting your performance air filter deliver huge horsepower and torque gains
The Hydro Shield's embedded hydrophobic treatment creates uniform micron-sized pores that filter out water and debris as small as .005"
Expertly crafted from highly durable, racetrack proven polyester
Your Hydro Shield was engineered to work best with cold air intakes that position the air filter outside of the engine compartment
Available in three hotrod colors: Red, Blue and Black
Injen covers your Hydro Shield with a Lifetime Warranty
Description:
Nothing cools an engine’s jets like water from your air intake. Whether you’re driving through a slight drizzle or a typhoon, your motor is in real danger of drowning. Injen’s Hydro Shield, however, stops water from sinking your vehicle. Riding right on top of your performance air filter, this durable polyester cover repels water while still allowing a free-flow of oxygen.
The secret behind the Hydro Shield’s amazing success stems from its water repellent outer coating. It’s crafted using a sophisticated embedded hydrophobic process, which creates uniform rows of micron-sized pores. These openings filter out water and debris .005” or larger!
You don’t have to worry about choking your engine, though. The Hydro Shield purifies the oxygen while still allowing steady airflow—and consistent airflow means rip-roaring horsepower and massive torque. Plus, the Hydro Shield comes in three stylish colors: Red, Blue and Black. Covered by a Lifetime Warranty.
Notes:
For a proper fit onto non-Injen Air Filters, check the following measurements of your current filter:
Base: The circumference at the bottom.
Top: The circumference at the top.
Tall: The height from base to top.

| Re: The Intake Thread so essentially it would be better to convert the fujita F5 CAI to a SRI? and if so, how would you convert it? just not use one of the pieces? i have on '06 xB

| Re: The Intake Thread If you have a CAI and are worried about hrydrolock - you can also purchase an "Air bypass Valve". Air Bypass Valve for Cold Air
AEM’s patented Air Bypass Valve virtually eliminates the chance of hydro-lock in the event the filter of your AEM Cold Air induction system becomes submerged in water. On most systems, the valve installs along the upper portion of the inlet pipe and shuts down induction at the filter when it becomes submerged, rerouting air through its external diaphragm to keep water out and air flowing in. Check with your dealer or call AEM for more information on air bypass valve installation locations. The AEM Air Bypass Valve is C.A.R.B. exempt on AEM Cold Air induction systems only and is NOT for use on forced induction vehicles. Patent #6,394,128.

| Re: The Intake Thread I have the Injen SRI and absolutely love it. The only downside is that there are no CARB exempt intakes for '05 and up xB's, the only legal part is for the 2004 model. So if you do get an intake in the future, make sure you don't sell or throw out your stock set-up. |
