| Re: gas mileage these elusive mpg's, i tell you..... The wifes tC is averaging 24 and the xB is doing 25/26. Her car is an automatic and mine is a stick. My 93 Daytona with a V-6 5spd does 25mpg with 127k on the clock. And I corner carve that car! I eeked out 31 with the xB on stockies. but never more than I mentioned with the Works. The other site has been posting about increasing mileage by pulling the snorkle off the airbox. So I am gonna try and Mythbuster it. Based on their findings, even my car should get better mpg. Or so they think. I feel they are not filling up all the time. You know, $15 here and $25 there at different intervals and mileage. That would give inaccurate data. Tomas!! any insight to this? Have you tried it?? Otherwise, we'll have to see in a couple weeks on my car. Gonna start raining and go back to winter in Chicago again(sigh) so the car will be parked for awhile. |

PS
My Torched Penny stick has 3000 mile and gets right at 31 or 32 mpg |

| Re: gas mileage I think that tread width plays more of a factor than the weight of the rims/wheels. It's funny what JDMjim was saying about newer cars because me and my bud (who's an automechanic) were talking about the same thing not too long ago. All the extra technology that they pump into these newer rides doesn't do anything for gas mileage. He was saying that a '95 escort that he had got 40 MPG on the highway. A lot of the older econo boxes were the same way (older civics and corollas or whatever). The biggest problem that I've noticed is that they keep on making cars heavier and heavier. Most small imports from 15 years ago only weighed a ton (if that). Now most of them weigh over 3,000 pounds. |

| Re: gas mileage it's not to say the Daytona is a lightweight. Oh yeah, I don't keep a spare. Too much weight for corner carving. still, it's heavy and hard to toss around. Yeah, one airbag(drivers), no A/C either. I've actually pulled the back half out of the interior once. Too noisy tho. Fuel pump drove me nuts. My freinds 92 Turbo Civic get better mileage than a tC. And it's a built D16Z. Funny. Still, my MPG test is inconlcusive to date. getting rain for the next 3-4 days now. |

| Re: gas mileage I think that is all pretty cool - My Civic was 10 years old and barely modified enough worth mentioning and with stock 14" wheels and steel rims I would get 40+ miles per gallon. I am sure that with a smaller lighter body ( XA ) with the same engine would probably do the same. But there is always the sacrifice of MPG for the added benefit of "Space" |

| Re: gas mileage my plan is to do this real world style. No granny driving. I live in chicago and that is not allowed. I'll get runover by an Escalade or something. Oh, that happens anyway. So let's see if this litte"mod" even really works. I have to take the highway and I have to drive 70. hell, the semi's will drive you off the road there are so many of them. So the snorkle removal will be a real world test. Mythbusters style... |

| Re: gas mileage Okay I read all the post on this subject. I just bought the xb 2 weeks ago and I get bad gas mileage. I only got around 250 until the gas light came on. The xb has 12k on it. I read somewhere that a tune up wasnt recommened until 100k. The car came with the trd 18's, cold air and trd exhaust. What am I doing wrong I dont drive fast. Oh yeah its and auto. |

| Re: gas mileage Have tracked all my fill ups since purchased in March 07. Getting an easy 325-360 per tank which is about 32.06 mpg average. One tank of Shell gas the middle grade and some town but mostly highway to work 28 miles, I got 36.02 mpg on that tank. I'm an engineer with NASA and yes there are different blends and formulas for regional use. I only use synthetic oil and monitor tire pressures weekly. And as an added benefit use a free flow washable air filter. |

| Re: gas mileage Wow, I was not aware that an air intake system affected gas mileage negatively. That is disappointing because i got my xb for great mileage and I've been trying to NOT do things that will give me less mileage! I just put a K&N air intake on my xb. So...how much less mileage do you think I'll get? . I opted not to get bigger tires and rims so as not to affect mileage. I opted not to get a magnaflow catback because it's $365 for 4 hp and everybody i've talked to says their gas mileage did not improve. If i knew An air intake system caused less mpg, I probably would not have gotten it. I'm only at 4,000 miles and when i go for my 5k tune up I will be putting synthetic oil and a perrin light weight crank. On my Dodge Dakotta, several people convinced me that if i put a K&N air intake and a magnaflow catback exhaust that it would a. give me more power and b. give me better gas mileage. My mileage is the same as it ever was, if not slightly less! |

| Re: gas mileage old post but ohwell
i generaly use Shell and Cheveron gas and get hella mileage. i run a manual and normaly shift at about 2,300rpm and ride the gears low. 30-45mph i stay in 5th and keep the rpm's low. just last week i drove 35mph on 5th gear about 25 miles one way and about 30 miles back and the needle never moved. 35mph, 5th idles at around 1,500rpms, just enough to keep it going and if a hill presents it's self, hit 4th, steeper hill then 3rd but my area doesn't have many bad hills and stays fairly flat. i find i use more gas on the freeway then i do in town most of the time. first tank i had on it i got just over 430 miles out of it and it was all in city driving between 30-45mph and doing the same thing, just coasting on 5th. |

| Re: gas mileage I just got new wheels (Enkei RPF1) that weigh 9.8 lbs and keep my tires at 32psi. My car is a little quicker off the line and my mileage went up at least 5 MPG (from 31 up to 36 mpg for 75% hwy). I didn't keep any scientific records, but I'm sure the lighter wheels made a difference. |

I was going back and forth between the RPF1s and the Falken Hanabi's at less than 1/2 the price but not as strong and about a pound heavier. But I'm going to go with the RPF1s because I can EASILY resell them to the auto-x crowd if the time ever arises...plus it has a better offset than the Falkens.
I'm going to match them up with the Sumitomo HTR 200s which are the only LRR summer tire available. My brother went with these on his Saturn wagon and picked up about 2mpg over his previous tires and got some more grip too. Around here we don't get snow or mud so a summer tire is perfect all year round.
Wow, if I can pick up 6-7mpg with the combo I'll be a very happy camper!
BTW...where did you get your RPF1s? I'm probably going to go with Tirerack since they have the tires I want as well and will mount and balance them for free which would save me $60. And they will also throw in the hubcentric rings as well which saves another $20. Hopefully I can find the time tomorrow to make the phone call. |
