Extra horsepower?

Hey All-
I've always loved cars but never had one worth doing any quality work to. Recently got my xB, and love it. I'm looking for ways to increase the horsepower (107 just isn't cutting it). I'm going to purchase an AEM intake eventually, possibly an exhaust.

A) Does anyone have any recommendations for an exhaust? My requirements are that it must be deep and low. Also, very subtle (I know my car isn't fast, I'm not trying to prove it is). NO ZIPPER EXHAUSTS.

B) Are there any other easy ways to get a few extra horsepower on your box? Obviously I could turbo it and such, seems like a waste to me though. Looking for cheap and easy ways.

Thanks all!

Re: Extra horsepower?

welcome to the source.

supercharger if money permits and if not then,

agency power pulley
sri or cai intake (sri for quicker response to yer throttle at dead stop and short run. cai for fwy pull)
catback exhaust (either tanabe medalion, magnaflow or borla)
shorten yer throttle cable (for quicker response)
header
short throw shifter
light weight wheels
engine dampner
eliminate all huge sub woofer box
all of the above is easy to install and undo. keep all yer oem parts for smog or inspection.

some worry about the tenzo but I have heard from a guy at a smog check that it passed with the tenzo cai, some people say not 50 or 51 state legal..

Re: Extra horsepower?

iirc, aem should be fine since toyota used them as their optional upgrade. then again i think it was for their 04 and 05 only.

injen cai/sri is carb legal for 04.

btw, be careful of using the oiled air filter since they may cause havoc on yer maf. if over oiled. also if you get a cai, make sure you invest in a "hydroshield" so to minimize hydrolock.

header will not pass visual inspection unless yer able to reattach the oem heat shield.

tenzo has had a problem with throwing a cel on most tc yet not confirmed with xB's.

power pulley WILL make a huge difference. go with either agency or perrin if available. i had the agency power pulley on my other xB.

AEM WOULD FOR SURE. MAYBE MIGHT EVEN GIVE A LIL MORE THAN TENZO FROM WHAT OTHERS SAY..JUST MAKE SURE TO USE A GOOD AIR FILTER AND KEEP IT CLEAN AND OILED..

Re: Extra horsepower?

Hey Scionites,

I'm ready to pull the trigger on some performance mods.
After plenty of searching through the forums. I've decided to pass on exterior cosmetics and put what I can into getting some zip outta my lawnmower of an engine.

Keep in mind that I'm poor so these mods fit my budget. Although if something is really bad I will consider spending more. Let me know if any of these mods are going to make my car sound like a tank tho...can't have it too loud...I like road trips and hearing myself think.

I just moved up to Norcal so I'm looking to go to one of these garages to get all this done once it arrives. 'cause I don't have tuner skillz like that.

Let me know your opinion on what's Cali legal if you know about that sort of stuff too....enuff of the blazayblah here's the stuff.

Okay. Here's what I got:

Megan Racing Scion xB 2004-Up Megan Racing Header
Agency Power Pulley - Crank Pulley
Tsudo xB N1 Axleback
Option Racing cold air intake

Here are the two garages I'm considering:

Griffin Motorwerke
Performance Options

Thanks for any and all advice. I'm ready to go....fast.

Tunergrrl

PS. I m being told that the pulley will destroy my crankshaft over time. #1 what is a crankshaft, and #2 what is a crankshaft?

Re: Extra horsepower?

the crankshaft it what makes the pistons move up and down. without it you wouldn't have a motor.. but no you don't want to mess that up.. there goes the whole motor if so.. it will start wearing out the crankshaft bearings then it will start to scare the crank then not only you need a rebuild but a new crank or to have it recut..

Re: Extra horsepower?

Pulleys are a waste of money. The gain isn't significant and you will end up with issues (e.g. squeaks, voltage issues, etc.). The factory crankshaft pulley a.k.a harmonic balancer is balanced to your ride and also has a rubber insulator to deal with vibration absorbtion. Go with the intake and exhaust mods but use known brands in order to gain engineered quality equipment.

Re: Extra horsepower?

Thx so much guys. Found out the intake is super illegal in Cali. Hate.
But the info I'm getting about the pulley is signifigant enough to make me change my mind. I've got about 20K left in my warranty so I think a TRD exhaust will keep me in the good graces of my mechanic for another 2 yrs.

I want to get some hard core swamping tires for the ride. Anyone hear of the Box modded for offroading...?

And to the dude who said slam it...I wish !!! I live in University housing..there's a speed but like every 4 feet....vrooom *scrape* vrooom *scrape*...ugh.

This helps a lot. No other suggestions for HP's. I/H/E but all I can do is the E.
*hangs head* I wish I lived in NY *still*

Re: Extra horsepower?

Look into the 1zz-fe throttle body swap. Cheap and will make more power than almost anything suggested here. Couple it with an exhaust and it's fun.

There's a DIY guide in the DIY forum.

Re: Extra horsepower?

I put a obx throttle body spacer and it seemed to take away.. from the pull.. with it on the power picked up smooth, and without the power would hit hard and shift hard.. what I like!!!! so I took it off and left it off...

Re: Extra horsepower?

A throttle body space is not the same thing as a throttle body. The 1zz-fe throttle body is a larger diameter and allows more air to get to the engine.

you will have problems only on the the "overdrive" pulley which will/can cause problems with voltage/electrical and mechanical issues later down the road.

agency and perrin if you decide.

ive had megan headers/agency power pulley (underdrive)/magnaflow type axleback/and both injen and fujita cai/sri intake and never have i had any issues with these aftermaket products. my current xB/bB is oem without the above mentioned and there is quite the difference in performance betwwen the two. i dont think that the color of the xB/bB makes a difference here.........lol.

talk with gabe @ precission muffler to hook you up on parts and install. hes in norcal.

oh yeah btw, take note on this young kid crxgames. he does make things work.

Perrin Lightweight Crank Pulley FTW! Best motor mod for the money to me (N/A off course). I'd go on but I don't want to repeat everything I posted in the other threads.
