Last night on the interstate I sent a piston rod though my block. There's 3 holes, one in the front, one in the back, and one on the bottom. half of the piston is wedged at the top of the chamber. There's likely to be some valve damage, I'll find out when I get it all torn apart.

And before anyone says "Pics or it didn't happen". I'm here to supply!

You can see the valves past whats left of the piston in this pic.

You can see right though the engine block in this one.

A shot of the front of the engine block.

Just some of the stuff that's come off the car.

Status so far, all wires disconnected and labeled. Radiator removed, AC compressor removed, starter removed. Intercooler, front frame and bumper removed.
Still to do: Remove CV joints and axles. Disconnect exhaust. Then it should be ready to pull.

Any advice on how to remove the CV/Axles is appreaciated, I'll be hunting the forum for a DIY in just a bit.

Re: blown motor club's newest member.

31k with 7 lbs of boost. And it detonated when it wasn't boosting. Just crusing along at 70-80 on the interstate, then bam. Car shook, felt like something bounced along the bottom of the car, and a black cloud came out of the front of car.

I'll be investing in new pistons and rods. I'm looking to build it to run 10lbs minimum. Any suggestions are very welcome. I'm trying to do all the work myself, so they need to be stock size. I can't bore the engine for bigger pistons.

You'll need a 30mm 12point socket to remove the axle nuts.

*Drain Trans oil first step

1. Remove Wheel
2. Remove Strut
3. Use 30mm socket to remove axle nut (breaker bar/air wrench needed, it's torqued down at 150lbs)
4. Use slide hammer or large flat blade screwdriver to pry axle from transmission
5. Slide axle from front wheel spindle

Re: blown motor club's newest member.

Money would be an issue.

If I'm doing a engine swap, I'm gonna do something major, like dropping a WRX engine in it and converting to AWD. But money is an issue at the moment. Maybe in a year or so I'll give it a shot when my new motor blows.

Re: blown motor club's newest member.

Hey chris sorry to hear about your motor I blew mine in febuary and have been building it since my thread has all the pics and info. My motor didn't detonate best I can figure is I hydrolocked the piston with oil. Just like you said we need oil catch cans because under boost we pull more oil through the PVC. Any way my motor is at one machine shop now with crower rods wiesco 9.5-1 pistons and the head is with a friend. They both should be done soon and hoping to be back together in a few months. I have some studs from arp for both the crank and the head they are not for our cars and the head bolts require modification to the block and head. If everything works I'll post part numbers in my thread and depending on hp out come may send my spare head to the guy that's doing my work to duplicate it and put it up for sale. Let me know if you have any questions

Re: blown motor club's newest member.

I'm looking for performance parts. I'll probably buy a stock engine to hold me for a year, and in the mean time, build a new motor to handle more boost.

Re: blown motor club's newest member.

I pick up a motor with 41k miles for $400 stripped it down and sent it off to the machinist and the head is being ported & polished only problem is I'll have no base line for that because I never had the car dyno'd and because I lowered the compression ratio so it's going to be hard to determine which addition had the most effect. Studs are a lot better then bolts strength wise and the stock head bolts are on extreme back order through most dealers also I'll be running a 12psi wastegate
