Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change?

I did the first at 500 miles, the second at 1500, and all the rest at 3000. I understand the new intervals are 5000, but having worked on engines, you can see the difference at 100,000 plus miles, in the 3-5 debate, in the valve train. 3k is way cleaner, but both still function well. Suppose it's up to the user, but for me - Fresh fluids make me happy.

Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change?

I do mine every 5,000 miles. Most cars now a days are manufactured to go that distance without an oil change.

actually the difference between now a days and the 3k thing is the quality of oil manufactured. It is more refined than it used to be.

Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change?

when i first got mine, i changed at 500, then 1,500 and then 3,000 every time after that due to it being new from factory and i wanted to go by the freshly built engine standards of oil care at the begining of it's life.

i change my oil every 3,000 miles and use Castrol GTX anti-sludge during the winter for the most part and for the summer months i use toyota standardized Castrol GTX. once every 3 oil changes i do a "Sea Foam" treatment to the fuel lines, injectors and do a full valvetrain treatment too to get rid of any debris of any kind. i get so many fingers from my neighbors when i do... when doing a valvetrain treatment, you gotta put a load on the engine at high engine speeds to burn off what the seafoam has cleaned up and the only way to do that is well... burning through the gears down a good straight away that's safe to do it on lol.

Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change?

I just got my new xB, but my previous car was a 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT with 131,000 miles. I changed the oil at 5,000 give or take a few hundred and only used synthetic oil. Never a leak and didn't burn a drop. Man I loved that car...Since my new car was on the lot over 6 months I asked the dealer to change the oil when I picked it up (222 miles) just cause Scion says change every 5K or 6 months which ever is sooner. Unless you are driving in extreme conditions (high dust, towing, taxi type driving) follow the 5k recommendations--engines are better today as is the quality of oils. Chief

Check your owners manual--each year could be different. The 09 calls for 5w-30 or 0w-20

Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change?

My friend worked at a Toyota dealer and a lady brought in her car for a check up, she said she had never had the oil changed or done anything to it. They check the mileage and notice she has driven the car for 60,000 miles with no oil change. Alarmed they pull the engine apart and find no sludge, it was pretty clean. They did a standard oil change and sent her on her way.

Here is a interesting read from consumer reports:

Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change?

Ya its quite crazy, cars are pretty efficient these days. I have changed mine every 5000 - 6000 on all my cars, I have a 97 camry that still runs like new worst issue I had was a couple seals got worn from the harsh florida weather but after replacing them no leaks or other issues.
