I run synthetic in my 66 mustang, but its a performance machine...I would recommend that you spend a few bucks more and get a high quality filter. fram tough guard are my choice! as long as it has a silicon anti drainback valve so that you dont run dry on start up,buy it! |
i totally agree.....a good oil quality filter is just as important as the quality of the oil one choses. i usually use dealer filters, but I'll research the fram tough guard. Thanks for the tip. |

The best arguement to use syns (yes, even here in SoCal) is cold start-up protection.
Fram OF are NOT a good choice, period. The Toyota filter also has a anti drainback valve, but it doesnt matter since the way the xBs engine is set up, the hole in the filter always faces up. It is impossible for the filter to NOT contain oil.
Cut open a fram and cut open a Toyota filter....a picture is worth a thousand words.
FYI - You can pick up synthetic oil on sale at Kragens and Pep boys for $1.49/qt. This is Pen. platnium 5w30. It is a Group III just like M1, but a fraction of the cost.
Also check out the UOAs on BITOG website - the xB motor shows less wear with PP than M1.

| Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change? Dont get me wrong...you are free to use any oil and/or oil filter you wish.
Fram oil (extra guard, tough guard, all of them) filters have garnered a reputation for poor quality construction. A few decades ago they were a quality brand, but compared to other brands, they are inferior in construction.
I don't think this necessarily applies to their air filters; its much more difficult to hide poor quality since the element is easy to inspect.

| Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change? I usually change my oil at 3000mi. I'm kinda in between jobs right now so I finally decided to use my 2nd complimentary oil change from my dealership. I just went back to Bob Baker(SD) for an oil change. when I left I notice that the next scheduled oil changed is for 10,000mi. I think it's kinda long.
I asked the service rep. about it. He said my engine is clean and in good shape. I can wait 10,000mi. till my next change just keep an eye on the levels.
I hope he's right. |

Mine is out between 2000 and 2500. And a new filter goes with the oil. I have had as many as 175,000 on some of my cars and no engine problems at all.
good luck on your choice. you will surely get good advise in from this group. |

| Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change? It's nice to take care of our cars. Consider how good engines (esp Toyota) are and everybody else describing how much better various oils are.
I'd like for us to consider our impact on the environment in terms of where oil gets dumped into landfills and such disposal places.
If you anticipate that you'd drive 100K miles and change your oil every 5K, that's 20 oil changes.
If you change every 3k miles, now you're up to 34 oil changes. That's almost 60% increase over what the manufacture recomends.
That could mean 14 extra oil changes that you don't have to pay for and pollute the environment with.
It's not about the money you save. It's about the environment you save to help our future generations.
I don't want to speak for all of us, so please don't flame me. It's just my two cents. But it is food for thought.... |

| Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change? never really thought of it like that.
thats an average of about $420 that you would save.
and our engines expected to go 200K plus, that would be $840 at the low end, or more if you pay more for someone to change it for you. |

A primary use is to rerefine it into a base stock for lubricating oil. This process is very similar to the refining of crude oil. The result is that the rerefined oil is of as high a quality as a virgin oil product. In fact, rerefining used oil takes from 50 to 85 percent less energy than refining crude oil.
A secondary use of the used oil is to burn it for energy. Large industrial boilers can efficiently burn the used oil with minimum pollution. As a result some used oil is sent to power plants or cement kilns to be burned as fuel. On a smaller scale small quantities of used oil are burned in specially designed heaters to provide space heating for small businesses.
As long as one properly disposes of used oil, all evidence I have seen shows no real impact on the environment when compared to real issues. Overpopulation has a bigger environmental impact than used oil. |

| Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change? i agree with skylergirl you have to be enviromentally concious. i hate seeing big hummers driving around when we have just as much interior space and get 6x better gasmilage. that said i do change my oil at about 3.5k to 4.5k miles and the engine has only even seen fully synthic like mobil 1 and castrol syntec |

| Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change? on my 09, i had the oil changed at 1600. i still get the 5k and 10k oil changes free, so i still plan on doing it around that mileage. i will probably switch to synthetic after the freebie oil changes because i do alot of city driving and live in the midwest. |
