| Vanilla had her factory oil drained at 1500 miles, and replaced with synthetic. Since then she's been on a 5000 mile/6 month schedule with synthetic. She gets Toyota filters, exclusively.
This should more than adequately protect the lubricated parts of the engine. |

Usually for performance engines they suggest the first at 500 miles then regular intervals afterword. Usually 3k for the second than up 5k, 7k, 9k, or even 15k depending on manufacturer.
They make a Saab that only needs on every 30k. |

| I changed mine at 3k and then switched to Mobil 1 full syn. and change every 5k. It has 42k on it now and runs great.
I was told by the local Toyota dealer, that the reason you change at 5k instead of 3k is, the engine has a unit above the oil filter that keeps the oil in the engine instead of draining back into the oil pan. Thus causing less wear during start up (where most wear occurs) meaning fewer contaminants in oil, and fewer contaminants means longer oil and filter life. I'm not 100% on this but it is what I was told, and the oil pan looks like it will only hold 1-1.5 quarts. |

| I do at 500mi, then at 3k, then every 3k after that.
The way I look at it is 5k won't hurt if they say it won't but I've been doing it every 3k my whole life and at $9 a change you can't change it too much.
It's like washing your car, some do it every week, while others do it every month. It is all about what you like. |

3k for a change with synthetic gets pricey, oil filter plus, what 4 quarts in a Scion? |

So far it's been free from Scion (still on first three) |

Freakin' filters cost a fortune plus the 6.5 quarts of synthetic for the Z06 than as soon as that oil change hits the wifes Scion bam. (I use special oil filters for the LS6)
I'll pay over a hundred for oil changes every few months...
That does include radiator top off's, wiper fluid, etc but still. |

| I dunno about everyone else but I changed mine out after 500 miles. When I drained it, it was sparkly. Had a buncha little metal flakes in it. The mechanic I worked with at the time said that is normal cause it's a new engine. As far as all the other oil changes afterwards. . . It's been the normal 3 months/ 3k miles. However I always end up doing it early. I'm under super severe service cause I put lotsa miles on the box. I've put about 50k miles in about 2 years. Whereas the average drive probably puts anywhere between 10k-15k miles.
Like I always tell most of my customers, it's never a problem to do the oil changes early, but if you are late all the time somewhere down the road it's gonna cause problems. Just like a lady we have who has a lexus. She didn't cahnge her oil often enough and it turned "sludged". We got lucky cause we were able to clean a special oil screen in the engine, and it saved the engine. However now she's in every 1k miles otherwise the oil light comes on. Do what you will and listen to what you can. Everyone is going to have different advice. Some people get away with changing their oil maybe twice a year. Most of my customers with 200k miles plus are my taxi cab customers who are in here every month. That might not mean anything to anyone but it sure as hell means a lot to me, especialy if you see the streets of DC. lol |

| This is my second box. Changed first at 2500, next at 5000. 5000 ever after with premium oil. Switched from M1 to Valvoline synth cuz it's a little cheaper at Wallyworld. |

6.5 x $4 =26
....but I usually spend $30 for 5 bottle then additional each costs almost $6+.
Then the filter costs $20+; in the end about $26 for the oil filter (shipping, high pressure uber oil filter).
Can't legally change my own oil on AFB property, and it's a ***** to get lift time at the auto shop. To many ricers think that you need to put your Civic on a lift to install a wing (?).
I haven't had to change the Scion's oil yet due to dealer freebies. It'll cost less than the LS6's changes though, quite a bit since I can use a normal oil filter as well. Even if I change it twice as much.
Also I get into the environmental aspect. Changing oil needlessly causes environment contamination. Even treated oil isn't magically made into mineral water.
Lastly (mentioned before) 500 mile break-in for oil before you can play with it. If you have a low temp thermo then it is going to take even longer. |

| If you're using organic oil, change it every 3k.
If you're using a full synthetic, check it at 3k, if it looks like new, wait till 5k, check again, if it's still "like-new" then you can probably go to 7k. If it's visibly dirty or running low change it sooner.
It also comes down to how hard you drive the car, what mods you have, the milage of the car and how well it's tuned. If you do anything (since your last oil change) involving the air filter, intake, or the exhaust manifold, I would take it in sooner. |

| That's pretty funny. The sad part is, I know people who would fall for that. The "Testimonials" are a nice touch. Quote:

| My favorite is of course the radiator insulator. What a GREAT weight to save all that wasted energy. |

| 5k, whatever toyota puts in it, and a toyota filter, because it's free and it's just a craptacular little 4banger that makes no power and doesn't need anything better. |

| Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change? My new '08 xB is replacing my aging VW TDi Beetle. my Beetle has 170K on it, still with the original clutch and engine (and turbo). I only used Mobil 1 5w40 (summer) or 0w40 (winter) oil in it. The car still runs strong. I only changed the oil every 10-15K.
Here's how I understand it. If you do a lot of short trip, where the engine doesn't get a chance to fully warmed up. change the oil more often. The reason is, things like water and other contaminants get deposited in the engine oil due to condensation (just like how water vapor gets collected in the exhaust system when the engine is cold). The engine needs to get hot enough for long enough to burn off the water vapor and other contaminants in the oil. Other reasons for changing your oil more often is if the car is used for towing (or stressing the engine), living in very hot environments, and places that are very dusty/dirty (or if you are using a K&H filter, since they don't filter as well as paper, and dirt can get in the engine and into the oil)
I don't fall in any of the above. So I will continue to use Mobil 1 full synthetic in this car, and change it every 7500 miles. First oil change will be at 1K. |

| Re: 3,000 or 5,000 oil change? I use conventional oil with an additive and have changed out my oil @ 5,000 miles religiously since Ive bought my box.
I run synthetic in my 66 mustang, but its a performance machine...I would recommend that you spend a few bucks more and get a high quality filter. fram tough guard are my choice! as long as it has a silicon anti drainback valve so that you dont run dry on start up,buy it! |
