| CV Joint Death Has anyone done the work to replace the cv joints on there own? because im pretty sure this is the problem. accelerating makes the noise louder, like a thuding noise makes the car shake, turning doesn't help the noise, when i turn it sounds like rubber is being rubbed against and regardless - i kinda hope its not difficult to replace |

| Re: CV Joint Death maybe if you didn't suck at life this wouldn't be an issue!
Just do what I told ya, and find the problem that way. Process of elimination.
For future newb reference, Jack the car up just enough to get wheel off ground.
Pull and push on the top of the tire. If it moves back and forth its wheel bearing.
Also you can spin the wheel with it in neutral. If you feel it binding, or hear it, more than likely a wheel bearing. But be sure to check your wear indicators on the brake pads. If the metal tabs touching that is your grinding noise!
For cv joints, they will typically pop when turning. Common issue is the boot looses its axle grease and you start killing it that way. You'll know if you loose a boot because there will be grease on the inside of your wheel. (its REALLY nasty, been there done that on the xB, and another car).
If you can't figure it out this way, take it to a qualified dealer or tech. They don't always charge you to just look at it. Better to be safe and correct, than sorry and with out your boxity box! |

| Re: CV Joint Death I had to replace my CV joint after the Cat City show. I had a rip in the boot and didn't notice that the molly grease had emptied out over time until the part finally started to die. I had terrible vibration from side to side as both the inner and outer seal were gone on the drivers side. It was very visible when I jacked up the front of the car and put it in gear to see the wheels spin.
I picked up a new CV half axle at Monument Auto Parts for $119 with a lifetime warranty. It was pretty easy to replace. Just take off the tire, take off the rotor, ABS line and then swing the knuckle off the shaft. I used a scewdriver to pry the joint off from where it connected to the motor but a slide hammer would have made it easier. Then took the new one and just slid it back in and put everything back on in reverse order. Also, you will need to make sure you have the correct socket to remove the axle nut (also pry up the crush groove or you'll damage the threads). |

| Re: CV Joint Death ^^^ what he said. replaced mine due to torn boot, but i also ended up tearing the side tranny seal when reinstalling the new CV. i replaced the seal and musta torn it again, cus it still leaks like 2-3 drops a day . def need the slide hammer to get the axle outta the trans easily. its for sure not an easy job. expect 4-8 hrs depending on your mechanic skillz. |

| Re: CV Joint Death Wedge a prybar between the inner CV and trans case and hit the opposite side of the CV joint with a hammer. Always worked for me. |
