CV axle's have play in them.

OK if this has been covered I can't find it.

Both driver and passenger axles have a small amount of play (movement) in them where they go into the trany. It's about 2-3mm of movement. I just hit 26K. I've changed axles on other cars and never seen one move after it was in. I may just be paranoid but I checked on a friends box and his don't move at all. He's also on air ride so we tried it at different heights but there was no play at any height. The whole reason I even noticed it was because I get a sound like something is loose when I hit bumps in the road like metal to metal contact. So I started looking to see what was loose. I already changed the end links so I know that's not it. Not sure if any of this is related. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: CV axle's have play in them.

If you are lowered the usual suspect making the clunking noise is the single top hat nut under the rubber cover. They are not supposed to be reused (per Toyota manual) and have been known to come loose after lowering the car, especially if the keyway was not aligned when the top hat was put back on.

I'm not sure about the play in the shaft, but you can download all of the Toyota shop repair/wiring/tsb's from here. good luck

Yeah I'm familiar with the top nut thing. I think I may have cured the driver side after tanking it apart and resetting it last night. Thanks for the link and the info.
