| Planning my system So I mentioned planning a system in another thread, and gravebox said ask for help if I needed it, and insted of threadjacking i made my own. Now I installed at best buy for 3 years, I know the basics of putting a system together, but I am no pro by any means, and if someone smarter and better then you offers help there is no reason to turn your nose at it. I am 100% confident on my install abilities, I might try to do some fiberglass with this install though and it will be my first attempt at that.
Ok, first off, I listen to everything, I LOVE big bass, but it’s not something I need. I manly listen to Rock, A7X, Green Day Nirvana, Rise Against, Mudvayne, ECT. If you have see my other thread, I want to add a screen above my rearview and I MIGHT view movies on it, but that is not a priority. This build will be a budget friendly basic build, I might be able to buy a project car in the next year and if I do I plan to go big in that, if not then I will come in and overhaul this car to a higher end system. But that’s not what I am looking for, now.
To start off I have a head unit in my truck that I am going to be trading in soon so the wife can get a new car. it’s a Kenwood KDC-MP628 that I intend to use, I have not fully explored the abilities of this unit as it was my wife’s and I just tossed it in my truck when I bought it due to the lack of a cd player. It looks like it will do the job well, only has 2 preouts, but I only plan on running 4ch's so that’s fine, I need to see if the crossover and eq in it will suffice, or should I run an external. For the amp, I plan on running a single 4ch, front and sub, I am thinking of trying out the Elemental Designs NINe.4, I have heard allot of good things about them and the price is right where I want to be, I am up to other options, but I don’t want to buy from unauthorized dealers. If I had my way I would be running 2 Arc ks 125.2 mini and hide them in the dash, but they are about 350 a piece and that’s to much for me, but maybe later. Front Stage
For the rest of the system I was thinking of trying out Elemental Designs. I am planning on a set of e9.65i 6.5 components in the front, I am going to place the tweeter in the stock location to begin with, and I might do a fiberglass pod on the door to hold the tweeter right above the speaker location. If I can find another set of door panels I think I will do full speaker pods, or I might try making full new door panels, but most likely not. Kick panel pods are not really an option for me, as my name states I am a bigguy, about 7' and I have a size 19 shoe, so I need all the space I can get there. Rear Stage
Not wasting my time, the speakers are in a very bad location and I don’t really see the point in them, I fade the stock all the way to the front to begin with. If I can find door panels I would like to add a set to the back doors, but that’s manly a way for me to practice fiber glassing, so don’t worry about that Bottom End
I also plan on using as little amount of space as possible with this build, and if I run the amp I plan to is capable of 150x1rms at 4 ohms or 100x2 at 2 ohms, so I have a few options, I can put a 10 or a 12 under the pass seat, this would be the easiest option. I Might be willing to give up the space in the back where the storage compartment is, if I do this I could fit 2 10's there, I would build a nice smaller box and mount the amp in a nice way, I would most likely fiber glass the side so I got the maximum amount of space. No my third option is also the most work and most likley the least amount of output, but it would be Fun, and stealthy. I could remove the 2 rear speaker and using a mix of expanding foam, mdf and fiber glass build an enclose and mount 2 6.5' or maybe even 2 8' subs in the stock location
Lastly I am aiming at keeping this under 1000, and even lower would be nice, I have all the wiring I need left over from my install days, and I plan to do some sound deadening, might do the whole car, depends on how much equipment I buy.
So any thoughts? Ides? Suggestions? I hope to be doing this by Christmas time. |

| Re: Planning my system So i am doing some research and i have fond that woofersetc is an authorized dealer of CDT and i have heard really good things about them. I have never delt with them myself but they look to be good. Now woofers has some good prices on them. they lots of system made up for good prices, but i think i am going to piece together my set up.
Has anyone used CDT? What do you think about them? |

| Re: Planning my system took me a bit to find this post :P.
looks to me that you're going for a more sound quality system and judging by your music tastes, i think you'll be glad to hear that you wont need to really worry about much at all...
cool thing is, our stock sound system is pretty darn decent when tuned just right. and when the bass end is designed properly, you don't need to worry about EQ work or any other crossover systems other than what the amplifier for the subwoofer supplys.
for your taste in music, you'll want to keep an eye out for subwoofers with a QTS and QES that's REALLY low like around 0.30 and or lower. specifically because this suggests a VERY responsive motor structure that will guarantee crystal clearity in bass production. since most rock / metal based music is extremely abusive to speaker drivers, the more accuracy they have, the better they're take it. so look for a light weight cone, low QTS, low QES, high BL *impact ratting*, low VAS and high sensitivity.
infact from my previous mentioned example in another thread, a Peerless 12" 830500 follows with those lines. it has a QTS of 0.20 and a QES of 0.21, a VERY light weight cone, a VERY high impact ratting for what it is and a decent sensitivity level of 90db. you could use a pair of these for VERY responsive and clear sound, you'd only need about a 700-800watt amp and an inline converter for the stock head unit. they are 8ohm a piece so you'd have to make sure you base your amp off of 4ohm operation on parallel wiring bridged.
830500 Peerless is about 150 a piece and you can get your self a decent amp around 700-800watt for about the samee price aswell. that plus building supplies and you'd still be within your budget limitations and you'd get your self one hell of a kick.
you see, the 830500's don't have a center bored vent, they use pump based cooling for the voice coil. because of this, they don't add sound coloration when really pounding. they also use a very light weight aluminum voice coil and because of that, it suffers almost zero power compresion. power compression is noticeable when you start to crank the volume. you notice that the subs seem to get to a certain point and then fail to really gain in ouput after that... it's like an engine with poor top end breathing, power compression choaks the top output end of what the motor structure can do. the 830500 doesn't suffer from this and will go all the way to it's limits without failure. it's cone is also molded specifically to reproduce music from it's resonance point of 18hz upto 900hz without having any bad dipping in it's response range so it wont miss a single beat. this sub is purely full of awesome... period.
you can find it at partsexpress.com for about 150, most other places will charge a little over 200 for it. Quote:

Kenwood - 12" 4-Ohm Single-Voice-Coil Subwoofer for $119. | i honestly don't have alot of experience with sony Xplod amps. not because i haven't worked with them, but because every time i have had to work with them... they've proven over and over to be unraliable. i stick to what normally rules the amplifier realm, JBL. JBL's amps are engineered by Crown International. this goes for ALL models of JBL amplifiers, not just the BPX badged amps, Crown International owns JBL, they also own a very large amount of other sound industries and companies and produce some of the finest amplifier tech i've ever seen.
so, it's a JBL amp that's been released around 2003 and later, it's pretty darn good quality. elemental designs also make some decent amps to what i've seen. Rockford makes some good ones too from time to time but i can't comment on all car audio amplifier companies since i haven't had the chance to go through every one of them. but i WILL say, if you can find a source for a JBL BPX500.1 amp or BPX1100.1, you wont be going wrong at all.
as for kenwood's subwoofers, i haven't worked with them in a long time specifically due to when i left them behind, thier motor structures in most of thier products were really weak and really only meant to carry bass notes and shake things rather then have nice clean tight hits and clear bass production. a weak motor = sloppy control and tends to sound REALLY muddy. |

| Re: Planning my system Sorry to post this way but i am new to the forums. I have an 06. I planning on replacing all my speakers, i want them to sound better, not that much louder, my speakers rattle like crazy. I planning on getting.
2 X Pioneer TSA1683R 6.5-Inch 4-Way Car Speaker (Pair)
1 X Legacy LS328 3.5-Inch 120 Watt TwoWay Speakers
will this give me enough bass because i dont have enough room for a dedicated bass, will they fit, and are they any good? Will i need a new amp, if so which one would you suggest ( i need it cheep), and how hard would that be to install? |

| Re: Planning my system if your stocks are ratteling, i would be wondering if you bought your 06 used or not... and if you got it used, i would take it back to who ever you bought it from and have them replace those drivers. it's a seller's obligation to have a good reputation for future sales, having sold a product that is or has defective mechanics or parts would mean you as the buyer have every bit the right to exploit it.
as for your setup in question. i honestly don't know, i haven't used those pioneers before and i don't touch legacy products so i can't really say. i will say though that for a 6.5inch to fit properly, the mounting spots require a bit of dremel work but it'll fit fine. |

| Re: Planning my system Not sure if you'd be interested in this setup, there are a lot of peeps here that has seen and heard it, I listen to a very large variety of music and it plays all very well, $1000.00 for the complete setup if you have a gen1. "FS"/Nor.Ky-Cinti,Oh/Gen1/Audio/Local/Ship
If you have a gen1 everything will pop right in. other than that the equipment alone is worth that.

| Re: Planning my system ^^ that will not fix his rattle issues.
your ratteling is caused due to over excursion damage. the rear of the voice coil is more than likely crumpled which makes that rattle like side from the crumple stoping the movement of the cone in mid operation. i would probably be bugging your freind there to get you new drivers since he's the one who caused the damage.
a decent full range system i would say is the JBP power series which would require an amp to help push OR! you can simply Ebay some replacement OEM drivers for the xB and add in a small sub system in the back, turn the bass down at the head unit and increaase signal sensetivity at the subwoofer amplifer to counter it. this will act as a small actuating crossover in a way by limiting the amount of bass the full range drivers see while subwoofers take care of the rest. |
