strut tower moves when turning?

so Kevin (xbox626 on here) called me about this weird problem that he is having and he isnt sure if its normal or not. he said that when making full turn, the strut tower sticks up a little. confused, i went outside to my car to see if that happens to mine too. here are the pics of what im talking about.

went to my car and turned left all the way.

as you can see, the driver's strut tower is different from the other side. so i guess its normal.

closer look.

test subject #2, my brother's xB2.

hard to see, but there is big difference on each side.

passenger's side.

driver's side.

when i put turn the xB straight, it went back to normal.

anybody else have this problem? its not like im complaining, but its interesting to find that out. haha, i learned something new about my car today.

Re: strut tower moves when turning?

yes the struts do "pivot" when turning. its suppose to on all vehicle. if it dosent, itll bind.

Re: strut tower moves when turning?

I know that the strut pivots but the strut tower and/or strut tower bar shouldn't move at all

Re: strut tower moves when turning?

Not sure if there are any for the xB but most other cars have a 3pt strut tower brace to keep the flex to a minimum. I know on my car there is a 1/2 inch of flex in hard cornering...

Re: strut tower moves when turning?

I know on my Alero I have a 2 point and it doesn't show any sign of movement or flexing

And I believe there a few different brands and styles of STB and I particularly like the one for DC Sports

Re: strut tower moves when turning?

top hat bolts where the strut bars attach do not move. yet the struts do pivot when turning/cornering.

strut bars keep the top portion of both struts proportionally equal in distance together to keep the top portion of struts/towers in place without spreading unequally which may result in "soft" turning/cornering, body roll or front end body flex.

lower portion of struts are held by multiple components to keep struts in place as much as possible during normal turning/cornering. for aggressive/heavy turning/cornering, lower swaybar may help in assisting the oem swaybar also.

frame brace maybe used in conjunction with the two above mentioned and with application of the lower rear swaybar and upper rear bar to stiffen up yer suspension and body/frame.

Re: strut tower moves when turning?

ohhhhh I see what you are looking at, yes that is normal. those turn to keep the struts from binding
