DIY Engine cover paintint

Ok here goes..... my first DIY.... hope this is ok for you guys....

Ok first off remove the engine cover. There are 4 10mm bolts, take them off and set them aside. The cover itself should come off fairly easily. May need some wiggiling but it will come off.

Engine Cove Prep:

take a damp cloth, with just warm water. I don't advise using soap at all. I have seen soap do some funky things to plastic when ya try to paint it afterwards. Once it's all clean let it dry completely.

Engine Cover Paint:

I did 2 coats of Engine Primer, I used a light gray because I was painting the cove a color similar to TCM, prolly just a shade darker. The primer I used is the following:

Dupli-Color Engine Enamel Gray Engine Primer DE 1612

That is right off the can sitting in front of me as I type this up.

Now my 2 coats were not on the same day. I did one coat let it dry, and actually road around or about a week before I did coat #2. again I did the same as before, made sure it was clean and did a second coat. these were not heavy coats... this paint covered really well.

Now the final coats. The paint used is below:

Dupli-Color Auto Spray Medium Charcoal Metallic DSFM225

Ok the final coats were done just like the primer. I did one coat, let it dry, did the second a day or 2 later, then did the final coat just last night.

Ok now a little bit about looks vs feel. The cover is a little rough feeling, and I will prolly clear coat it later on. but for now the pics in the original post listed below:

http://www.clubxb.com/forums/f2/13804-first-mod-2/

Now I have never done anything like this ever in my life.... so this was a real trial and error process for me.... I am just glad there were no errors!!!! My next will be doing the dash and speedo cover. I promise I will have more pics for that and post a DIY on that also if anyone would like one from a total newb to the modding life!!!!

Well that's about it.... if ya have any questions feel free to ask.... you am PM me or just post them to my original and if I can help in any way I will do my best!!!

Thanks,
John

And repainted again, damn razor blade marks! It looked ok, but he's going to paint it one more time.

Did you scuff yours at all before painting it? Robert, I had yours primed and wet sanded already to go into the booth and was blow drying it and all the paint inside the "Toyota" logo blew off, right down to the black. Then I had to work on it some more. Always scuff the plastic with atleast a red scotch brite before painting.

Sorry but I never painted the toyota emblem or letters (so I didn't scuff up that part)that is why I had the razor blade marks around it.

Smile Good job with the write-up

You might want to get the Engine Cover VVT-i Overlay from Randode ($6) to finish off the look. (They make multiple colors for both classics and 08's)
Here's a link, they're near the bottom of the page:
