DIY:Hardwiring a Radar Detector

Hey whats up,
I'm gonna tell you guys how to wire in your radar detector for a clean finished look and for the option of using your ciggarette lighter for a charger, etc...
tools needed:
1 screwdriver
1 pair of wire cutters/ strippers
1 wire krimp

here we go...

first cut the biga$$ ciggarette male fitting off

thier should be a positive(red) and a ground wire (white or black). pull them back so that you have 5" of both of them then strip the ends

First find the big white wire with a blue pinstripe: this is your 12 volt constant wire. Connect the red to this wire via wire krimp..( in this I have a red extension coming off of the white/blue.

it's that easy, one more to go connect. find the other 5" wire and connect it to the ground that hold the fusebox.

goodbye big bulky ciggarette lighter module

hello cleanliness, the 12 volt constant will give you all control over the unti and you will be responsible for turning it on and off. I chose to do this rather than the ignition wire so i will be able to turn it on even when the car is off.

hope this helps...

Re: DIY:Hardwiring a Radar Detector

Please be aware that inside that bulky lighter adapter is a fuse used to protect your radar detector. Since you have removed that to make a cleaner installation you now have left your radar detector unprotected...

Just a quick observation...those wires with the exposed ends showing, are they hot? You don't want to have any power leads with exposed copper showing. You could ground out and blow a fuse or damage your equipment.

Re: DIY:Hardwiring a Radar Detector

Ive talked to many people that have done this and the detectors don't use enough energy to damge themselves. I get what your saying but I got this off of another forum and they told me that they've had thiers wired in for 2 years with no problems. Unless it worked really hard which i cant imagine how that would happen.

And those wires were snipped and sealed soon after the hard wire.

Re: DIY:Hardwiring a Radar Detector

It's your stuff so you make the choice. I've seen many electrical items burned out and ruined by not using a fuse. They are installed for a reason. Remember that the surge doesn't always come from the amount of electricity that the item itself is pulling. Power can travel in the direction of the item even if it's off. That's why a surge protector is a great idea for your home computer...you never know. I guess I'm just a stickler for protecting my stuff.

Re: DIY:Hardwiring a Radar Detector

Simple solution would be just to get an inline fuse holder and put the fuse from the lighter adapter in it. Problem solved, all is happy.

Re: DIY:Hardwiring a Radar Detector

i would recommend this route. its proper.
you can add the link to the existing "ACC" slot in the fuse box under the dash L/H side. its marked on the fuse door as "10" bottom row. also ground on bare metal on body away from interference from radio, etc.

adding an in line fuse between switched/unswitched power source to the component is a safety feature that should not be neglected, regardless of amperage drawn. protect yer goods.

That's the way I hooked mine up. Really easy and didn't have to hack away at anything.

Re: DIY:Hardwiring a Radar Detector

Just to add. make sure you check the output voltage on the cig. adapter. Although it plugs into a 12v, most gps and some radars only take about 5v. Just easier to check before than burn em up later

you can buy kits on ebay to hardwire your radar detectors with fuses installed, under 20 bucks worth it to me.
