DIY 1st Gen Auto Shift Rod Extension (slapstick style)

*****The following DIY is for information purposes only. I am not responsible for any damage that you do to your car or any damage caused by the type of mod, ie. slap stick shifter does carry inherent risk if not properly used)****

Tools Needed:

Hacksaw
Drill
Step drill bit
Screwdriver (flat or phillips)
TIG welder
grinder

Parts needed:

1 - 2' (or any size you determine) 1/2" metal conduit pipe
1 - 15 1/4" piece of 3/8" plastic hollow tubing
1 - 7/16" nut ground down to fit inside pipe
1 - 7/16" x 1 1/2" long stud
2 - rubber grommets slightly smaller than 1/2" to go around the 3/8" tubing
1 - momentary push button switch
1 - roll electrical tape or quick connectors
1 - can of your favorite color paint

Step 1 - Remove OEM shifter and console

Step Two - Cut Conduit Pipe to size

Step 3 - Cut 3/8" plastic Tubing to 15 1/4" size

Step 4 - Grind 7/16" nut down to fit into end of pipe and then weld 7/16" nut inside top of one end of 1/2" conduit pipe

Step 5 - Insert 7/16" stud into nut and tack weld in place

Step 6 - Drill two set screw hole in base of metal conduit pipe
slide pipe over oem piece and mark holes with pen or pencil

Step 7 - Paint pipe in your favorite color and wait to dry

Step 8 - Find wiring for OEM "OD" switch and cut of OEM switch at end of wires.

Step 9 -Drill hole where you want to relocate the OEM "OD" switch and attach new switch with either tape or connectors. Fit switch to location.

Step 10 - Attach rubber grommets to plastic tubing then insert tubing into conduit pipe. Next, insert pipe with plastic tube insert over OEM parts and tighten the 2 set screws

Step 11 - Unhook lever that controls key sensor (this allows you to remove the key from the ignition. If you do not perform this step, you will not be able to remove the key. Once performed, the key can be removed while in any gear setting).

Step 12 - Reattach OEM shift components and trim bezel

Step 13 - Screw on your new shift knob (you will need a knob threaded for 7/16" 20 fine thread or a univeral adaptor)

You are now finished and ready to enjoy your new mod.

***Please Note*** You now have a "slap-stick" style shifter. This means extra care is required in order for you to drive safely, it is possible for you to knock the shifter into an incorrect gear setting while driving which can cause damage to your car).

With a few modifications to the above DIY, you can have this extension without it being a slapstick style. You would just need to have less of the plastic tubing that used above and a groove cut into the pipe in order to insert a finger lever which once pressed down would allow you to change gears. In this set-up you would ignore step 11.

If you do not have the proper tools to complete this DIY mod, I can have the a kit made with all components ready to go for sale. You would only need to supply your own shift knob and perform the OD switch relocation and unhook the key sensor (step 11) yourself. Cost for kit (free shipping to all 50 states) $75.00 USD

Awesome write up and execution! Mad skills. I didn't think about detaching that lever when I did mine, I just zip tied the little swith into to open position. Time to get back in there and just pull that off.
