Crazy question, how tight do you tighten the new nut on the monroe shock. Until you can't tighten anymore? Thanks for any help.

Not a crazy question at all. I believe I got mine right (pretty damned tight), but here is the CORRECT answer (from the xB repair manual).



BTW, I did measure the length of rod from the "seat" to the end: The OEM shock and 5987 SensaTrac are identical.

yeah thats why you buy the 5870 monroe's to go lower only if you have air ride

Yeah good question. Like Tomas said the rods are the same length. Also the replacement top nut is the same height as the stock nut[2] (though not the same width.) Anyway, those two things being the same, an easy way to tighten to original specs in lieu of a torque wrench is to tighten until seven threads show. My stock rods each showed seven threads from the bottom nut before I removed them.

Just curious on why you chose the shock model you did insted of the shorter 5870's. With the 5870's wouldn't the shocks "sweet spot" be more fitting to the drop you had.

I know this is an old post, (great one btw taz) but I had a question.

I replaced my shocks with monroes about 2 years ago or so and it made a HUUUGE difference and increase the ride 10-fold. Anyways, it's about time to do it again as i've put on 50k+ miles since then. Do the same shocks (part # 5870) work on the front AND back? I plan on getting some df210's to replace my aging espelirs (spelling?) so I figure I might as well replace all 4 shocks when I put the springs on.

i want to do this i put a box in the back and it rides like crap that box is heavy i noticed once i took it out that it rides better will this actulyl help me if i change them out?

Front of xA and xB Classic are MacPherson struts rather than just shocks.

If you used standard length SensaTrac shocks in the rear (P/N 5987), they are are for a 2002-2005 Toyota Echo, and the 2002-2005 Toyota Echo SensaTrac struts (P/N 71575) will fit the front of the box, BUT it will lower the front of the box by 1/2 inch due to the spring mounts on the Echo struts being mounted 1/2 inch lower on the strut.

If the 1/2 inch drop suits you, then the 2002 Echo front struts work just fine, IF NOT, there is now a SensaTrac strut for the front of the box (P/N 72245) that is a little beefier than the Echo strut, and very similar to the stock xB front strut in performance.

If you used the P/N 5870 shocks, I'm assuming you have a lowered box, and I'm not at all sure what the appropriate strut would be for the front.

Thanks for the response. Well, i'll be getting some df210's in to replace my espelirs (1 1/2 inch drop I believe). I have the stock struts in the front atm, and the monroe (lowered). Perhaps i'll just leave the front alone and replace the rear again (i replaced them originally 50k+ miles ago, they're long warn out)

Last time I will ever ask this question again because this time I am writing it down LMAO...

i have DF210's and i need to replace the rear shocks because they suck with these springs. Should i replace the shock with the Sensa-Trac 5870s or something else for lowering and a smoother ride. Please let me know before i make a stupid mistake LMAO.

my question is: why does monroe recommend other shocks (2006 xb) then you install. 5601 for the back and 72245 for the front.
