Perrin Pulley Install DIY with pics

ok, as promised here it is.. i wish more of the pix had come out, but this is the best i could do working in the driveway.

at a minimum you will need:
a jack of your choice
a jack stand
19mm socket
12mm socket
10mm socket
14mm combination wrench
breaker bar or impact
ratchet
6mm? allen wrench (or whatever is handy)

first things first, get the car up on the jackstand (you only need to get to the passenger side of the motor, but over acheivers feel free to do what you will)

pull your passenger side wheel off, unscrew the lower motor cover plastic thing (or whatever you choose to call it), there are 5 fasteners all are 10mm (one nut, two hex head screws and two hex head bolts).

once you have the cover off loosen you alternator. one 12mm hex up top, one 14mm hex below.

remove the belt from the lower pulley only.

here's where i look like a hack... read on but keep in mind i can hardly get into my garage with all the crap for the remod going on.

you need to loosen the 19mm hex head on the crank pulley, i would recommend using an impact, i couldn't get to my compressor so i used an allen wrench (6mm) and slid it through the little hole in the pulley and jammed that into the engine block, it actually worked really well.

also, i couldn't see where to loosen the power steering belt up so i just popped the pulley off as it was, put the belt on and popped the pulley back on. i started the bolt, then lined up the pin, and tightened it all up... an impact would have made tightening this up a lot easier... but i made due with my allen wrench and breaker bar =)

then just do everything in the reverse order and you are done.

now, onto personal opinion....

when i was racing VW's we used to have the flywheels lightened, which is the same idea here, you lighten the rotating mass and it gives you a quicker throttle response... the down side to that, was that downshifting didn't work as well (less weight to slow you down) and you didn't get a good kick when you speed shift (because just like the motor revs faster, it also slows down faster therefore having less "oomph" when you hit the next gear)

enough history...

i like how it makes the car a little more peppy coming off a light, it RPM's faster, but it doesn't give it any more horsepower, it just changes the availability of it. it sucks not feeling the hard kick when you speed shift from 1st to 2nd gear. down shifting doesn't work as well, so now i have to change driving habits. but i was prepared for the results.

all in all... bang for the buck, it's an easy mod... it took me 45 minutes to do, that includes wandering around a garage that looks like someone flipped it over and shook it, my neighbors coming out and asking questions about the house remod and wanting to look inside, and taking all these pix...

so, all in all it's cool... but in the end it doesn't give you more horsepower, it just changes how it's used...

hope this helps you guys out

Congrats on the install. I've been satisfied with mine. I definately like the extra pep it gives. Thanks for the pics and the write up on it too..

I'm sure many people will appreciate it.

Re: Perrin Pulley Install

that looks awesome!! i almost bought that one but had heard more about the perrin brand. i like the red better than the plain aluminum, but i guess it really doesn't matter at all since you can't see it =)

Re: Perrin Pulley Install

Nifty pics and steps. Gonna be my next mod. Just a couple of tips. I'd use as large of a "wedge" (your allen wrench rotation stop) as possible. The larger the tool, the more spread out the forces, and less likely to nick/gouge anything. It's not hack, it's doing what you have to do, with what you have. Also when installing the bolt, some brake cleaner, or Loctite's primer would really be great in prepping the bolt for Loctite.

Just trying to help.

Re: Perrin Pulley Install

oafs,

the perrin pulley and the acency are identical in function just a different center design.. the perrin still runs both belts, i just didn't take a pic from the back...

Jetblast,

i did, in fact, clean the threads and put some "do good" on there, i just didn't list it in the steps, i take some things for granted... oops!

Nice write up, maybe one of the mods could move it to the DIY section. I believe it could be helpful for many.

Re: Perrin Pulley Install

Great Article. It is sure to be very popular and should be an important addition to the DYI section. I wonder after reading your Sad Day post how you would change this install. What would you do different?
I have read that a pulley mod would give more power, better gas milage. At least as much as a CAI. True?
How does it effect the battery charging or the ac operation?
Just a new guy with questions

Re: Perrin Pulley Install

the only thing i would change is how tight i got the pulley nut =) and i would have taken a better look at the index pin to make sure that was in good shape. the pulley doesn't increase horse power, it just makes it available, you get better response but it doesn not give you more, it helps the acceleration, but probably drops the MPG a little bit. it doesn't affect the battery or a/c at all, it is not an underdrive pulley, it is just lighter than stock to decrease the weight of the rotating mass.

Nice Job Milt. I've moved this thread to the DIY section. Thanks for the write up. I haven't done this one myself but I think I will soon.

Re: Perrin Pulley Install DIY with pics

what about a pulley on an automatic trans? I was told the pulley won't help out much... I just felt like I needed to get a "second" opinion

Re: Perrin Pulley Install DIY with pics

my car is a standard trans, i'm no help on that one, sorry. it seems like it would help just by principal, but i don't know how much "seat of the pants" difference it's going to make.

This is the first car I've ever actually been able to mod. I have had no real experience when it comes to working on cars either. The first mod I did was lower my car. It took me 8 stinking hours without a spring compressor. It was a learning experience though. Once you start with something and are successful you'll get the confidence to keep going. Since lowering I have installed my strut bar, nitrous, front and rear sway bar, grounding kit, perrin pulley, short shift, and in about a month(maybe less) will be installing my turbo kit. I guess what I'm saying is GO FOR IT!! Just take your time and follow the directions step by step. I like to print them out and take them into the garage with me, I also print up the pictures so I can put bolts with them so I know where things go.
