| CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) So guys I've figured a way to prevent the sucking of watter through a wet filter on the boxes. I've fashioned two plastic plates that attatch to the plastics creating protection from water/moisture for your cool air intake in the driver front at the bottom corner of the bumper and in front of the wheel well...
Pictures soon up and I have the patterns if someone is interested. Just trace and cut out of you favored material.
Im going to test it out and see how the rig holds up to some puddles but if all goes correctly, It'll mean a cheap and easy way to not sweat rainy days in your CAI driven and possibly lowered BOX.
Pictures up soon... |

They also make bypass filters for intakes for those who are really worried about water. I guess they are usefull for long intakes where the filter is down by the tire, but for the most part I think peopel are too worried about water. Water is only a problem if you complelty submerge your filter in water and it just sucks it up.
Here is what i am talking about http://www.aempower.com/ViewCategory.aspx?CategoryID=20 |

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) no, it really more or less creates a boxed in area where the CAIs filters sit. basically it extends the plastics... i'll put a pic up right now. I have to go take off my bumper real fast.
really, water is no problem? true story.... my buddies girlfriend comes to my house drivin his turbo golf and it was raining bad... we get to talking and she basicallly ended up tellin me that his car was fixed up... so i tell her to pop the hood.
immedeately i saw his CAI and it was pouring so i reach down and that thing is soaking wet...
i warn her she calls him... he doesnt care....she drives home
next day his whole car starts smoking when he starts....
now hes been working for the last 4 days drying out his intake man. and changing the oil over and over
ANYONE WHO SAYS THAT PEOPLE WORRY ABOUT WATER TOO MUCH IS A RETARD...

Let me rephrase, Intelligent people worry to much about water.
If I had to guess what happened I would say is car is lowered and his girl ignorantly drove it through a huge puddle she had no business driving it through and it sucked up some water. Rain alone will never cause that effect.
A bypass valve and some common sense is all that is needed. I was not trying to "diss" your mod, I would like to see it. I was express my opinion, which I guess it retarded. Normally people post of forum to recive feedback. Not sure why you on a forum

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) Im no retard and I dont worry about water, I just choose not to drive in high water where the filter would be submerged. If your stupid enough to drive in high water subnergering the filter then you should expect the unexpected, HYDRO LOCK!!! Quote:

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) BOTH OF YOU.... TRY LIVING IN HOUSTON THEN TALK PICS UP TODAY I JUST HAVENT GOT AROUND TO TAKIN BUMPER OFF AGAIN
1. Whats the only problem exhibited with CAI? Hydrolock
2. What do most peeps have on the boxes here?... CAI
3.If it werent a problem or concern, then why do they actively market products that prevent hyrdolock? MAYBE BC ITS A CONCERN (i.e. AEM bypass valve)
4. I live where it rains at least 3 days a week so whatever.
P.S All I wanted to do was share with others of what I thought was gonna be a great idea... If I knew I would be attacked for the smallest of topics then I would have just chosen another forum to put my ideas on. Or better yet just keep it to myself. So as to fellow box owners wanting to negate a good idea before even knowing what it is, gj for being douches. |

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) I in no way attacked you. I was curious about the idea, and asked what it looked like, want to see pics, etc. I like to see new ideas, and never said it wouldnt do the job or that it was a bad idea. A lot of people may not be a handy and I wanted to let everyone know that bypass filters does exist, because know ever seems to have heard of them. I was merely giving feedback, that is all I can do until you post pics.
You were the one that used to term RETARD, which is offensive. I didnt know that I wasnt allowed to have an opinoin. Skeeter also found it offensive and decided to comment on it.
And by the way, if you look at Skeeters avaitar you can see that he does live in Houston.

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) Since I've put on my Ingen SRI I've been concerned about water getting in there. My problem is that the water gets between the headlight / foglight openings and drips onto my filter should this be a concern? Not sure how much water will cause it to hydrolock. I've been looking around for some kind of shield that covers the filter. This may be what I've been looking... |

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) rnwhunter123, design might work for this if it will fit in that location.
Other options are the bypass filter. And, perhaps the cheapest and easiest solution to your problem would be a heat shield for intake filter. You can get these at autozone and simply face it so it is blocking the water coming from the hole. |

A by pass filter is a filter that goes after your conicle one, and before the TB. Usually they are put closer to the Tb. It collects any extra water your other filter might suck in.

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) hey racerone just so you know, in order to hydrolock your motor you need enough water in a cylinder to where the piston can not move up because of all the water there for "locking" it in place. the problem arises when you consider the fact that the other pistons are still firing and trying to move also the car is still in gear trying to move the crank. this will usually mean you end up throwing a rod or somthing.
now as far as hydrolocking with water dripping on it i don't know, the only time i have seen hydrolock is when it has been submerged in which case that aem bypass won't do squat, i have know friends that have had them fail simply cause it can't displace all that water with enough air.
also keep in mind that if you actually keep your filter oiled like it should be it really shouldn't get all that wet
now as far as rnwhunter123 product sounds, i would be more worried about restricting air flow to the filter then i would be getting water in it, but like it has been said were are these pix
and just in case rnwhunter123 calls me a retard i'm gonna put my flame suit on lol Quote:

josh | think of it a short foam piece of pipe and when you plug the normal path it will suck air in through the foam pipe to make of for the increase in pressure

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) CAI will be OK during rain. Just make sure not to drive in puddles where the filter part will be submerged in water. even when the filter is soaked in water, it will be fine.
You have to realize that CAI pipings are usually long. For water to travel all the way up to the throttle body will take a long time.
Also, vacuum that the engine make is not that strong. so, unless there is a hydrolock, water will not just get shoved into ur engine.
..end of story |

| Re: CAI + WATER = NO WORRIES (I invented the solution!!) Hey, Believe it or not the scion CAI for the 08 is well thought out and is designed well enough not to allow water in, and it does not use a bypass valve. Just had to throw that in! |
