Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

So a few weeks ago I noticed a weird noise that seemed to be coming from the tires. It was a womping noise that matched the revolution of the tires (the slower the speed, the slower the frequency of the noise. the faster the speed, the faster the frequency). I primarily noticed it during turns only.

However, during the past week or so, I have noticed the noise occurs even while traveling straight now. The noise is fairly audible and can get slightly annoying, you can also feel it inside while driving. Any idea what it could be? I researched a little about wheel bearing noise and I couldn't find anything that described the exact noise.

And I have checked tire PSI and all my tires are pretty new.

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

You could have a tire that's seriously out of round. When I scrapped my OEM tires, one had a flat spot. And yes, mine thumped with each tire rotation, too.

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

Why not do a tire rotation? You'll hear if that makes the noise change so you'll know if it's one of the tires or something else.

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

I took the car to a mechanic. Had him take a test drive and before he took it down the block, he knew it was a bad wheel bearing.

I will be seeing -$300 from my bank account come 8AM tomorrow...

Hmm, those tend to grind more than whomp.

I am skeptical of mechanics anymore, I've had some questionable "fixes" before.

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

I should mention that this is a family mechanic we have used for years with many of our vehicles. he is extremely knowledgeable and provides excellent service. I will report back here once the repair is complete!

Oh lucky you.

A couple guys on here have installed bearings themselves, but it's not easy.

$300 for a wheel bearing? The technology must have changed.

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

No ,hub bearings will def. give you a wop/wop sound. A tire wouldn't change sound as you load/unload the bearing. If it's the front they are probably figuring in a wheel alignment check with the repair because the steering knuckle has to come off. As far the "trust mechanic" remark goes I despise people that have done this this us honest techs, however once customers do find us honest techs we stay busy with the scumbags customers. And just as with almost anything, get a second opinion!

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

Maybe if the hub was damaged. Otherwise, $50 for the bearing at an auto parts store, $50 for a machine shop to press the bearing in, and $100 for an hour labor?

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

Yeah I have heard the repair is not an easy DIY whatseover, plus i can luckily afford it right now. Its been really annoying and its glad to get it over with. I will see what the invoice at the end of the day says and post it here!

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

Not much of a DIY as you need to have them pressed, but what I do is buy the parts myself then bring it in! Saves me some cash on the rare occasion I don't have the right tools

Re: Weird Tire Whomping Noise?

So I got it back and it feels like I drive a magic carpet. My car glides like butter. The overall responsiveness feels even more improved before I first noticed the womping noise. It is truly remarkable what one simple repair can do.

The problem was the front driver side wheel bearing. The part was $30, but labor came to 213.00. A hefty amount, but well worth it. Overall cost of the repair: $245.26.
